8 bit shift register IC named 74HC595 which can be used to get 8 parallel outputs from serial input. This IC can be cascaded to multiply the number of outputs. If we are using two 74HC595 ICs in cascaded format, we will get 16 digital outputs. Similarly, if we are using three ICs, we will get 24 digital outputs. Perhaps, if we have no ample digital outputs in Arduino, we could use this IC to get more digital outputs.
